Guitar Lessons
There are different ways of learning guitar and there are many thousands of guitar lessons available in one form or another. For example, you can learn it “by ear”, and then practice favorite pieces until you achieve a reasonable proficiency. However, if the intention is to get serious about it, if you wish to master the guitar, the best choice is to seek music instruction in the form of guitar lessons. There are several topics that a good teacher will approach with you, such as music theory, posture and style. Posture and style are about how to hold the guitar properly, how to manipulate your fingers, and how to get a correct posture in order to avoid pain. The teacher is going to help you learn how to strum, pluck, etc. There are some techniques that once applied in your guitar lessons, or in any other instrument, will help the student to get better results. For instance, you will learn how to play the instrument with the least tension in your body and hands, how to have your muscles relaxed so that you can reach a better technique, and how to avoid habits that generally lead to injuries.
Other topics covered in guitar lessons are: reading musical notations in all its different types; music theory; theory of harmony, which includes the simultaneous use of distinct pitches, chords, and key signatures (sharp symbols, flat symbols, etc.); recognizing time signatures, which are musical notations that specify how many beats there are in each bar (or measure) and the note value (duration of a note) that constitutes one beat (this notation convention is used in the western); and rhythmic techniques such as controlling tempo (Italian word for the pace of a given piece, for example, allegro, presto, vivace, moderato, andantino, adagio, largo, allegretto, etc.) and mood (also Italian words that accompany the tempo notation, for instance, agitato, dolce, giocoso, maestoso, sostenuto, scherzando, etc.).
Next, there are musicality lessons. This is simply teaching how to make music sound nice. In musicality, you will have lessons on tones, reading accents (which are emphasis placed on top of the notes), phrasing, use of dynamics, which is the music softness or loudness (the symbols are mainly f for forte – strong, p for piano – soft, mf for mezzo-forte, mp for mezzo-piano, pp for pianissimo, and ff for fortissimo), the style of a piece (legato, staccato, etc.), velocity, and gradual changes (crescendo, decrescendo, marcato, etc.).
Clearly, technical exercises are essential. Practicing scales, rhythms, and arpeggios (chords played in a succession instead of simultaneously) is of great importance to improve you fingers’ skills. Musical pieces also play a role. As some progress is achieved, they increase in difficulty. Musical pieces help the student to learn how to play distinct styles. Another important thing is examination. The assessment of the student’s development by means of regular examination in both music theory and practice is a good way of determining improvement.
Last, guitar lessons, as any other music lessons, enhance intelligence and improve discipline. So, if you are planning on taking it seriously, the benefits abound. You can even choose to have history of music and music appreciation lessons, which are going to help you with your instrument and also increase your cultural knowledge. |
