Guitar Tablature
Guitar tablature, called TAB in short, is a form of music notation which helps the guitarist to play music by correctly placing his finger on the particular fret in order to play the tune. If you are a learner, guitar tablature is a tool which will guide you through the notes of the music, and it does not require you to know how to read music. If you browse the Internet, you would find thousands of guitar tablature available for free download, which may provide you with good practice lessons. There are several guitar tablature song books available that you could buy.
Guitar tablature is a sheet of music notations, formed by a series of horizontal lines forming a “stave”, quite similar to the standard notation. The horizontal lines in a guitar tablature represent the strings in a guitar, and the standard tablature consists of 6 lines for the six strings in a standard guitar. As for the bass guitar, the tablature consists of 4 strings. The highest pitched string of a guitar is represented by the top line in the tablature, and the writing style of the lowest pitched notes on bottom line and the highest pitch top line follows the same basic structure.
Guitar tablature helps you to know when to play which note. It will tell you which string to pick and at which fret your finger should be. It also tells you where pulls-offs, slides, harmonics, bends and vibrato are used. If the tablature does not indicate the tuning of the musical piece, it can be assumed that it is in normal tuning. From a guitar tablature, you could also get the information about the use of capos, etc. The rhythm of the musical piece is also indicated in a guitar tablature, which helps you to know which the long and short notes are. Guitar tablature will not tell you how long and how short the notes are, except to indicate which ones they are.
The lengths of the notes being played will not be available from a guitar tabl. In order to play the music correctly, you would need to listen to the song and get to know the lengths of the notes being played in the song. This you should usually do with the guitar tablature in front of you, and as you listen to the song, you start to work out the rhythm of the notes that you listen to. A guitar tablature will not tell you which fingers to use on which fret, and it does not mention about picking and strumming. While playing a guitar, the uses of upstrokes and downstokes, and others, have to be decided by you.
Guitar tablature is easy to read, and as you get used to it, you can also write down the notes of a song that you have worked out yourself. As mentioned before, you have six lines for the six strings of a standard guitar. In case of a bass guitar there would be four lines instead of six. The top line in a tablature corresponds to the highest pitch, while the bottom most line represents the lowest pitch.
You will find numbers written along all six lines of guitar tablature. These numbers tell you where to fret the string when playing the note with that particular string. If a zero appears on a line, it would mean that you need to play the open string. Like any other musical notation, guitar tablature is read from your left to right, and as you read the notes you go on playing them. The lines in a guitar tablature is usually marked as E, B, G, D, A, and E, with A being the first string.
